Cariats australia blog
EXPLANATION:
The Caritas Australia blog encapsulates many different themes of peace. From "Harmony day: sport brings people together" to the protests in Syria. It creates a place where the public can be lively updated about not just about community wide issues, but global issues. Caritas Australia blog provides a place for the people of our country to have/put forward an opinion and have discussions about peace, discussions that can result in people becoming more informed, fund raisers being established as well as organising world wide events. This is all very important in creating world wide peace, which is why i selected it. Peace through freedom of speech is a strong Christianity value, some other religions aren't as lucky. Muslim school girl Malala Yousafzai is a perfect example of how some religions punish people for speaking out. For their to be any form of world wide peace, peace needs to first be restored through religion.

"Frontline police now 'better equipped' to deal with domestic violence, Assistant Commissioner Mark Murdoch says"
Young frontline police officers are inundated with domestic violence incidents but have never been better equipped to deal with the complex issue, the NSW Police Force's head of domestic violence says.
Assistant Commissioner Mark Murdoch, the corporate spokesman on domestic violence, said it was ''always a battle'' for young and less-experienced officers, who spend 40 per cent of their time dealing with domestic violence, to properly understand violent situations they attend. However, officers now receive more training in domestic violence at the police academy than any other aspect of the job. ''You only really get a feel for this by experience,'' he said. ''For the young ones, it's always a battle because they don't have that life skill and invariably they're the ones … dealing with calls from victims... |
EXPLANATION:
This article from the Sydney Morning Herald expresses just one of the many dis-harmonic issues occurring in our society today. Domestic violence has become so common in homes these days that more than a million women have experienced either sexual or physical assault by their current or ex- partner since the age of 15. This is just one of many shocking statistics of domestic violence and illustrates the unrest and lack of peace common to today's society. The fact that police are having to have special training to deal with the influx of domestic violence cases also emphasises this. Along side Christianity, Buddhism is also strongly against domestic violence/any forms of violence. Buddha's main teaching goal is to not only provide peace and happiness to his followers, but he instructs all family members to live harmoniously together. He states that "It is individual responsibility to refrain from all forms of violence". Personally i think this is a teaching that should be adopted by many to restore peace throughout society.

"Thousands of pro-abortion protesters gather in Spain"

Tens of thousands of Spaniards have taken to the streets of Madrid in a show of force against government plans to roll back access to abortion in the country.
Waving homemade signs with messages such as "My ovaries: not those of priests, nor of politicians", the crowd chanted and whistled as it snaked its way through central Madrid on Saturday. Police said more than 15,000 had turned out. "We are here to protest against a government that wants to take us back to the times of Franco," said one demonstrator, Manuel Navarro. "We are stepping backwards with this law." In late December the governing People's party approved legislation that would severely curtail access to abortion in the country. Since 2010, women in Spain have had the right to an abortion until the 14th week of pregnancy. In cases where the mother's health is at risk or when the foetus shows serious deformities, Spanish women can terminate the pregnancy until the 22nd week. Under the new measures put forward by the government, abortions in Spain would only be allowed in the case of rape or when there is a risk to the physical or mental health of the mother. Women wanting abortions will need the approval of two medical professionals to prove these circumstances. |
EXPLANATION:
Abortion is once again becoming a serious debate topic around the world and is causing great unrest in many countries, as proven by this article. Abortions can be looked at through many different angles when being related to peace. For instance, abortions can create mental peace at the thought that the mother/father will no longer have to provide for and look after an "unwanted" child. This is important if factors of age or financial status play a role in the capability of being able to look after that child. But on the other hand abortions can create serious unrest at the thought and fact that you would be destroying the life of such a young human being. Abortions should be apart of every women's general rights, not necessarily up to the politicians. Early Christianity greatly opposes abortions and still does to this day. Throughout the bible many references are made to that fact that all human life, no matter in what form, should always be valued. One of the earliest Christian writings states that: "You shall not kill the child in the womb or murder a new born infant". Many other religions carry the same stance as the Christian beliefs especially Judaism. The Torah, the Jewish law, forbids any taking of innocent life and in a very early teaching states that "... Who kills a human being, even a foetus in its mothers womb, is to be put to death". Obviously these teachings are quite old but show the severity of the Jewish beliefs on abortions. Ever since the 1960's great discussion has been had in the Jewish community about abortions laws, much the same as Spain in the above article. "Jury retires to consider verdict in trial of Brett Cowan, accused of killing Daniel Morcombe"
THE jury poised to decide the fate of Daniel Morcombe’s accused killer Brett Peter Cowan, 44, has retired to consider its verdict.
The jury heard 19 days of evidence and submissions during the trial in the Supreme Court in Brisbane, now in its fifth week. Cowan, who changed his name to Shaddo N-unyah Hunter, has pleaded not guilty to the murder of Sunshine Coast teenager Daniel Morcombe, his indecent treatment and misconduct with his corpse on December 7, 2003. Justice Roslyn Atkinson sent the jury of six men and six women to consider its verdict at 12.13pm. |
Crown prosecutor Michael Byrne QC told the jury Cowan was drawn into an underworld crime gang made up of undercover police over four months in early 2011, a sophisticated operation designed to elicit a truthful confession from him.
The jury watched a secretly-recorded meeting between the accused and the gang’s Big Boss Arnold at a hotel suite in Perth on August 9, 2011. In it, Cowan confessed to his involvement in the abduction and murder of Daniel. He then lead undercover police to the place where he allegedly left the body on an isolated sandmining site off Kings Rd at the Glass House Mountains. Mr Byrne told the jury the confessional evidence was ``truthful and honest’’. “Our submission to you is these confessions are a very powerful aspect of the evidence in this trial,’’ he said. “They are so powerful that they overcome any lingering questions you may have about the descriptions of the male at the overpass near 2.15pm and what I’ve submitted is the red herring of the blue car…’’ |
EXPLANATION:
The sad story of Daniel Morcombe is a story of personal peace found through the judicial system. The article, form the Courier Mail, shows how important someone being "locked away" is when trying to restore peace emotionally and mentally to the families and victims. The police force and investigators did not stop looking for evidence until they found the criminal. Which goes to show how some very important members of society will fight for peace until they finally find it. For Christianity and Australia, the judicial system is well bent on being fair and doing what's best for the victims. Our judicial system is based upon the teachings of Christianity. This is common for many religions such as Islams. The Islamic Judicial system relates strongly back to religion with the same teachings being referred to in the court room as they are during the ritual prayers and beliefs of Islamic people.
